Google Photos, the quintessential app for keeping memories and editing pictures, is now about to unveil a new eye-catching feature—face editing with great detail. The feature, which is coded as “Touch Up,” is said to have been found in an APK teardown of the app, according to Android Authority, and is likely to be in testing before being turned out for a wider rollout.

What’s Touch Up in Google Photos?

The Touch Up feature will empower users to make subtle changes to certain areas of a person’s face in a photo. The feature, which aims at providing fine control over facial edits, promises everything from smoothing out the under-eye to tweaking the irises, teeth, and lips. The icing on the cake is the option of editing different people in the same photo separately, choosing whom to adjust, and retaining the edited version for future reference.

The feature will be part of the Actions tab of Google Photos. On the first occasion, it will ask users to install the AI model that powers Touch Up. The level of editing can be selected for each feature and the modifications can be done directly on the pictures.

Why This Matters

Touch Up is a clear sign of Google’s increasing reliance on AI in the field of photo editing, and with its Gemini AI technology, the company is positioning itself to compete directly with high-end third-party apps that offer similar capabilities. It is indeed a game-changer. It would bring down the walls of exclusivity, making the artists in every user accessible through Google Photos.

The Bigger AI Picture at Google

Google is working on a grand scale by widening AI’s reach in its entire ecosystem. The tech giant rolled out Google Workspace Studio earlier this month that grants enterprise users the power to build AI agents capable of performing, distributing, and even sharing tasks with others. The Touch Up feature is thus in accordance with the whole Google plan of making AI prevalent all over app domains, ultimately, giving users smart and automated tools as their everyday experience.

AI agents and tools are slowly working their way into Google Photos and Workspace applications, and the company is trying to create a future where one can effortlessly edit, create, and manage content using cutting-edge AI technology—all within Google’s ecosystem.
