India has strengthened its global food security outreach as the Food Corporation of India signed a long-term agreement with the World Food Programme to supply 2 lakh tonnes of rice for humanitarian operations, with pricing fixed at ₹2,800 per quintal till March 31, 2026.

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has entered into a fresh agreement with the World Food Programme (WFP) to supply 200,000 tonnes of rice as part of global efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity.

Under the agreement, FCI will supply rice with up to 25% broken grains at a price of ₹2,800 per quintal. The current pricing will remain valid until March 31, 2026, after which the rate will be revised annually through mutual consultation.

The two organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will remain in force until 2031. The MoU can be extended beyond the initial five-year period with the consent of both parties, according to a statement from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.

Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said the partnership reflects India’s commitment to addressing global hunger and malnutrition. He noted that the agreement enables India to contribute meaningfully to international humanitarian efforts while reinforcing its role in ensuring global food security.

WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau described the agreement as a key milestone, stating that India’s support would help the organisation reach vulnerable populations more efficiently with nutritious food over the next five years.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen India’s engagement with international food aid programmes and support humanitarian operations worldwide.
