The viral evolution must undergo significant changes before major alterations in infection patterns or severity can occur according to microbiologists who track variant changes.

The past week saw India experience small increases in Covid-19 cases across nine states while southeast Asia also saw a rise in cases but experts report that Indian case numbers stay low without any concerning trends or new virus variants.

India reported an increase in active Covid-19 cases from 93 on May 12 to 257 on May 19 as shown by Union health ministry data with Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Sikkim and Tamil Nadu all recording higher case numbers.

Experts indicate that India’s small reported rise in Pandemic cases likely understates the true case count because people with respiratory symptoms usually avoid testing for Covid-19 but do not find evidence that the virus causes more severe illness now. Several states reporting zero active cases is likely a testing deficiency rather than evidence of no infections.

Recent case surges in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand stem from various omicron derivatives which dominated global infection waves between 2021 and 2022. The experts monitoring virus mutations predict that significant changes in infection patterns or severity will not happen unless the virus undergoes substantial evolutionary development.

Hong Kong's current variant is NB.1.8.1 which combines genetic elements from XDV and JN.1. Professor Rajesh Karyakarte from BJ Medical College in Pune reported that XDV developed from XBB while JN.1 emerged from BA.2.

The derivatives are based on omicron variants including XBB and JN.1 which spread extensively throughout India previously. Healthcare patterns will remain stable because current derivative strains won't produce significant changes. The immunity levels in our population resulted from our high vaccination rates combined with widespread natural infections.

Karyakarte belongs to an extensive network of laboratories that monitored genomic changes in Covid-19 throughout India during the pandemic. Genomic surveillance diminished because people no longer sought Covid-19 diagnosis as infection severity decreased.

Experts believe that sewage line samples monitored by the network may provide early warnings about potential outbreaks in specific locations. Souvik Mukherjee from the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics stated that sewage monitoring persisted long after pandemic cessation because they detected mild infection upticks in certain regions without observing any significant outbreak spikes.
