ECI rolls out major reforms to boost voter roll accuracy and enhance voter experience

In a significant move to enhance the accuracy of electoral rolls and improve the overall voting experience, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a set of key reforms, including data integration with the Registrar General of India (RGI) and a redesign of the voter information slip.
One of the major changes is the electronic sharing of death registration data from the RGI with the ECI. This will enable Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) to promptly remove names of deceased individuals from the rolls, reducing the dependency on citizens to submit Form 7 for deletions. Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) will verify these changes through field visits, ensuring the voter list remains current and accurate.
To make the voting process more accessible, the ECI has also redesigned the voter information slip. The updated design now clearly highlights the part and serial numbers of voters, helping citizens quickly identify their polling details. This will not only assist voters but also help polling staff conduct faster and more efficient searches on election day.
Another key measure involves BLOs, who will now carry standardized photo identity cards during door-to-door verification and registration drives. This step aims to build greater trust among the public and ensure smoother interactions during electoral outreach.
These reforms were announced following the recent Conference of Chief Electoral Officers, where Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the Commission’s commitment to cleaner rolls and citizen-centric services. The event was also attended by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
Together, these steps signal a more tech-driven, transparent, and voter-friendly approach to electoral management in India.
