Dy Speaker pulls up Sports Minister on MLC Tambe’s queries

MLC Satyajit Tambe raised a point of question in the House asking why the Maharashtra government has not approved and identified yoga as a sport even when the Central Government approved yoga as a sport in 2020. Notably, when Yogasana was included in the Khelo India Youth Games, Maharashtra won the highest number of medals i.e. 140 in the competition.

Mumbai, July 21 MLC Satyajit Tambe raised a point of question in the House asking why the Maharashtra government has not approved and identified yoga as a sport even when the Central Government approved yoga as a sport in 2020. Notably, when Yogasana was included in the Khelo India Youth Games, Maharashtra won the highest number of medals i.e. 140 in the competition.

"A total of 16 medals have been won in the sport of Yogasana alone. Not just that, Yogasana has been included in the curriculum of schools and universities as well. But, still it has not been given the status of a sport. As a result, sportspersons of Yogasana have to be deprived of basic benefits such as jobs, education and sports awards," Tambe said.

While replying to this, Sports Minister Sanjay Bansode replied the department will check. As soon as he said that, the Deputy Speaker of Legislative Council Neelam Gorhe remarked, "What is there to check?" And instructed the minister that Yogasana must be included.
