OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced plans to open its first office in India, with New Delhi chosen as the location. The move comes as part of the firm’s strategy to strengthen its footprint in one of its largest user markets and expand access to advanced AI tools.

Confirming the development, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country, and to build AI for India, and with India.”

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has already registered a legal entity in India and started the hiring process for a local team, according to reports.

Affordable ChatGPT Plan for India

Recognizing India’s growing internet population—close to 1 billion people—OpenAI recently introduced its most affordable monthly ChatGPT plan yet, priced at just $4.60 (around ₹380). The launch is aimed at making AI more accessible while also countering strong competition from local AI startups.

India is currently OpenAI’s second-largest market by users, and the establishment of a local office signals the company’s long-term commitment to addressing regulatory challenges, building collaborations, and scaling adoption of generative AI across industries.
