Cyclone Shakti weakens over the Arabian Sea — IMD confirms the storm is moving away from Maharashtra with only light rain expected in Mumbai and nearby regions.

The cyclone, Shakti, being the first post-monsoon cyclonic storm this season over the Arabian Sea, gave some indications of weakening as it kept moving farther from India's west coast. The IMD has withdrawn its calm from Maharashtra, taking in only light rainfall and cloudy skies for Mumbai and neighboring districts over the coming days.
Cyclone Shakti Weakens Over Arabian Sea
As per the latest bulletin of the IMD, Cyclone Shakti has been bringing wind speeds to the tune of 100 kmph since Saturday and has gained in intensity. However, starting Monday, the cyclone due to its displacing position shall steadily begin to lose its strength.
The cyclone is located about 220 km south-southeast of Ras al Hadd and 250 km directly east of Masirah Island in Oman.
It has been stated by the weathermen that the cyclonic storm will move west-southwestwards till tomorrow morning, i.e., Sunday, 6 October, and later from there it will begin to diverge towards the east, away from the coasts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The very altered track of this cyclone has given the peoples living in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar much relief, as they had been put on alert earlier.
Impact on Maharashtra and Gujarat
The IMD reassured that Cyclone Shakti has no immediate threat to the Maharashtra coast. Coastal areas such as Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Palghar will experience light to moderate rains accompanied by gusty winds at times from October 6 to 8.
In and around Gujarat, there may be some very minimal impact, with cloudy weather and isolated drizzle being reported in coastal districts.
Until then, the Maharashtra government had activated its disaster management units and emergency response teams, preparing shelters and evacuation plans as precautionary measures. However, now that the cyclone has changed its track, the situation remains under control.
Union Minister Seeks Study on Landslides
Meanwhile, the Union Minister for landslides, Sukanta Majumdar, called for a detailed study of the increasing incidence of landslides at the time of festivities in hilly areas. "It's very sad that such incidents occur when people gather to celebrate," he said. "The state should consult experts to prevent these in the future."
Current Situation
On Sunday evening, light rains continued in some pockets of Mumbai, including Mahim West, as the cyclone system drifted further into the Arabian Sea. The IMD further informed that Shakti presently has winds approximately 70 kmph (about 80 mph) and will most likely be downgraded into a depression by late Monday.
