Cyclone Senyar Likely to Form in 48 Hours; IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alerts for Southern States
IMD warns Cyclone Senyar may form within 48 hours as a low-pressure system intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. Heavy rain forecast for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar, and Andhra Pradesh.
IMD forecasts formation of Cyclone Senyar over the Bay of Bengal as southern states prepare for heavy rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning stating that the low-pressure system which is clearly marked and situated over Malaysia and the neighboring Strait of Malacca is likely to turn into Cyclone ‘Senyar’ in the next 48 hours. The system is taking a west-northwestward direction and is predicted to develop into a despair over the southern Andaman Sea in the next 24 hours before further intensification over the southern Bay of Bengal.
System Strengthening Over Bay of Bengal
IMD’s latest satellite imagery shows intense to very intense convection across the south Andaman Sea, the Strait of Malacca and surrounding regions.
Current wind speeds are estimated at 15–20 knots, gusting up to 30 knots, with moderate sea conditions prevailing.
A separate upper-air cyclonic circulation over Comorin and nearby areas is also likely to trigger the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and Sri Lanka around November 25, which may become more pronounced subsequently.
Cyclone ‘Senyar’: What We Know
If the system intensifies into a cyclonic storm, it will be formally named ‘Senyar’, a name meaning “lion”, contributed by the United Arab Emirates under the rotational naming list for the North Indian Ocean.
As per IMD guidelines, a system is named only after it intensifies into a cyclonic storm.
