Heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as Cyclone Montha further intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. Multiple regions are under an orange and yellow alert till October 28, with the system likely to attain the status of a severe cyclonic storm.

🌪 Cyclone Montha Intensifies Over Bay of Bengal

The IMD reported on Sunday that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to evolve into a cyclonic storm by October 27 and may become a severe cyclonic storm by October 28.

As of 11:30 PM on Saturday, October 25, the system was centred near latitude 11.0°N and longitude 87.7°E, moving west-northwestwards at around 8 kmph.

It currently lies approximately:

  • 550 km west of Port Blair
  • 850 km east-southeast of Chennai
  • 890 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam
  • 890 km southeast of Kakinada

The IMD predicts that Cyclone Montha will intensify over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by Sunday morning (October 27) before heading northwestwards and later north-northwestwards.

⚠️ IMD Alerts and Forecasts

The weather department has issued rainfall and wind warnings for multiple coastal states.

Heavy Rainfall Expected Over:

Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Kerala & Mahe: October 27–28

Coastal Karnataka: October 26–28

Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam: October 26–30

Telangana & Odisha: October 27–30

Chhattisgarh: October 27–30

Wind Speed Warnings:

Gale winds reaching 60–70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph over parts of the Bay of Bengal from October 26 evening.

Winds to further increase to 80–90 kmph, gusting up to 100 kmph, from October 27 evening.

By October 28 morning, gusts could reach 100 kmph, especially near the storm’s core.

Storm Surge Warning:

The IMD has also warned of a storm surge about 1 metre above astronomical tide, which may inundate low-lying areas along the coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam (Puducherry) regions during landfall.

🌀 Government Preparedness

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a detailed pre-cyclone preparedness plan to ensure public safety and uninterrupted essential services.

Civil Supplies Minister N. Manohar stated that the plan includes:

Stock positioning of PDS commodities

Fuel and paddy inventory management

Food supply to relief shelters

Post-cyclone relief distribution measures

“We have taken proactive steps to ensure readiness before landfall,” Manohar confirmed in an official statement.

🌧 Tamil Nadu and Odisha on High Alert

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, sees heavy rainfall along the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry within the next 24 hours, while the depression gains strength.

Till the meantime, across Odisha, all 30 districts have been put on alert. The IMD has issued:

- Red alert for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts

- Orange and yellow alerts for several other regions

Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall will probably occur in Odisha between October 28 and October 29.

🌦 IMD Forecast for Arunachal Pradesh

Eastern coastal states may soon feel the talons of this depression, but Arunachal Pradesh is slated for moderate rainfall and thunderstorms on October 29–30. Monday is likely to be partly cloudy to dry across the state, with light isolated showers in a few places.
