Bharat Bandh on Feb 12: Banking, transport may see disruptions

A joint forum of central trade unions has called a Bharat Bandh on February 12, with participation claimed from over 30 crore workers. Banking, transport and some public services may be affected, while essential services are expected to remain operational.
India may witness widespread disruptions on February 12 as a joint platform of ten central trade unions, supported by farmer organisations, has called for a nationwide Bharat Bandh. The strike is aimed at protesting the Centre’s labour reforms and broader economic policies.
Organisers claim participation from more than 30 crore workers, raising the likelihood of interruptions in banking services, transport networks and government offices in several states.
Why the Strike Has Been Called
Trade unions oppose the implementation of the four new labour codes, which replaced 29 existing labour laws. According to unions, the reforms dilute worker protections, weaken job security and make hiring and termination easier for employers.
Key demands include:
Withdrawal of the labour codes and related rules
Rollback of certain proposed legislation
Stronger employment guarantees under rural job schemes
Safeguards on wages, social security and privatisation policies
Bank Unions Extend Support
Major bank employee bodies such as AIBEA, AIBOA and BEFI have backed the protest. They are also pushing for improved working conditions, including a five-day work week.
Several banks have cautioned customers about possible disruptions:
Bank of Baroda flagged potential operational impact
State Bank of India said services may be affected to a limited extent
IDBI Bank acknowledged receiving strike notices from unions
Farmer Groups to Participate
Farmer organisations are expected to join demonstrations in multiple regions, potentially increasing the scale of protests and affecting movement in some areas.
What May Be Affected
Public sector bank operations in some regions
Government offices in protest-hit areas
Markets and shops in major cities
Public transport if road blockades occur
Some schools and colleges
What Is Likely to Remain Open
Hospitals and medical facilities
Private offices (subject to local conditions)
Airports and flight services
ATMs
Other essential services
Authorities are monitoring the situation and preparing for possible disruptions.
