Bengaluru’s ORR stretch set for a Rs 400 crore upgrade—Here’s what to expect

Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) between KR Puram and Central Silk Board is set for a major transformation, with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) allocating ₹400 crore to revamp the 22.7-km corridor. This stretch, which houses several Fortune 500 companies, has long been plagued by poor road conditions, causing significant commuter distress.
Aiming for World-Class Standards
In the latest budget announcement, Dr. Harish Kumar K, Special Commissioner (Finance), confirmed that the project would be developed to world-class standards in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka and Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize Bengaluru’s road infrastructure.
Key Developments Under ORR Revamp
BBMP is focusing on pedestrian-friendly initiatives under its "Pedestrian First" policy. The plan includes:
Construction of 1,000 km of footpaths to improve pedestrian mobility.
White-topping of 157 km of roads at a cost of ₹1,700 crore.
Asphalting of 118 roads, estimated at ₹694 crore.
Ward-level infrastructure boost with ₹2.5 crore allocated per ward for capital projects and ₹50 lakh per ward for maintenance, totaling ₹675 crore across 225 wards.
Railway Bridges and Road Expansion
To address traffic bottlenecks, BBMP has earmarked ₹20 crore for new railway infrastructure, including:
A railway over-bridge at 1st Main Road, Kengeri.
An underpass near Ramohalli Gate.
Additionally, five major roads have been identified for widening through the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) mechanism:
RT Nagar Police Station to Dr. BR Ambedkar College
Hennur Main Road (Lingarajapuram Flyover)
Shyampur Main Road (Pulakeshinagar)
Kenchenahalli Main Road (Yeshwantpur)
A More Commuter-Friendly Bengaluru
With these strategic investments, BBMP aims to alleviate Bengaluru’s chronic traffic congestion and infrastructure challenges, paving the way for smoother and more efficient urban mobility.
