Bengaluru, August 1, 2025 — The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has announced that the awaited Blue Line Metro corridor connecting Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to Hebbal is on track for completion by early 2027. This update comes following an inspection by BMRCL Managing Director J. Ravishankar, who reviewed on-site progress of the project’s critical infrastructure.

Key Highlights of the Blue Line Project

Inspection Overview:

The MD conducted a thorough inspection of viaduct segments, metro station buildings, and the Shettigere depot construction site. Particular attention was paid to complex areas such as railway crossings and tunnels near the Indian Air Force zone.

Metro Stations Inside KIA:

Two metro stations are under development within the airport premises:

Airport City Station – an at-grade station

Airport Terminal Station – a partially underground station located about 7–8 meters below ground

Both stations are being constructed adhering to standards specified by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL).

Project Scope and Connectivity:

The 58.19-km Silk Board–KR Pura–KIA corridor will bolster airport connectivity, serving Bengaluru’s southern, southeastern, eastern, and northern regions. Phase 2A (KR Pura to KIA) resumed last year after delays caused by a fatal incident at HBR Layout in 2023.

Challenges and Workforce Shortage:

The project faces labor shortages, currently operating at about 50% capacity due to scarcity of skilled workers traditionally sourced from other states who are engaged in multiple infrastructure projects nationwide.

Shettigere Depot:

Land acquisition for the Shettigere depot, the main facility for servicing and maintaining Blue Line trains, is complete, and construction is ongoing as per schedule.

Completion Timeline and Next Steps

BMRCL has emphasized maintaining strict quality and safety standards while pushing teams to meet the deadline set for early 2027. Once complete, the airport metro line is expected to significantly ease travel for commuters and enhance Bengaluru’s transportation network.
