Visakhapatnam: In yet another feather on its cap, Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), a premier Port on the East Coast of India, has achieved a milestone by handling 60 MMT of cargo in just 249 days of the current financial year, setting a new benchmark in cargo throughput.
"We are confident of further achieving records in our productivity by demonstrating our outstanding team effort and excellent support from the Government of India and the local administration, VPA Chairman Dr. M. Angamuthu told Bizz Buzz.
The latest accomplishment is a significant improvement over the previous record.
In comparison, VPA handled 60 MMT in 273 days during FY 2024–25 and in 275 days during FY 2023–24, reflecting exceptional year-on-year improvement in operational efficiency and cargo handling capabilities.
The achievement underscores the port’s commitment to operational excellence, a customer-centric approach, and its pivotal role in driving economic growth and trade facilitation in the region.
Despite global trade fluctuations and logistical challenges, VPA’s strong performance has been driven by strategic initiatives focusing on alternative cargoes, enhanced infrastructure, process optimization, and seamless coordination with trade partners.
Dr. M. Angamuthu congratulated the entire VPA team, terminal operators, stakeholders, and the trade community on this outstanding achievement.
“This record cargo throughput is a testament to the relentless efforts of our workforce, efficient cargo evacuation strategies, and the trust reposed in us by our stakeholders. VPA will continue to focus on infrastructure development, digitalization, and green port initiatives to enhance service quality and capacity,” he stated.
Handling 60 MMT of cargo in record time is a significant milestone for VPA and provides a strong boost to the entire team as they work toward achieving the annual target of 90 MMT set for the current financial year, he stated.
Despite competition from the rival private ports in the neighborhood, VPA had achieved an all-time cargo record by handling a throughout of 82.62 million tonnes during 2025-26.
With the NITI Aayog, the national think tank identifying Visakhapatnam as an emerging growth hub, Visakhapatnam Port officials are confident that the port sector will play a key role in transforming Andhra Pradesh into a USD 2.4 trillion economy by 2047.
