Winning elections is important — every cycle matters. But what’s even more crucial is convincing people about the value of continuity in governance,” says Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Information Technology, Electronics, and Communications, in an exclusive conversation with Moneycontrol.
According to Lokesh, the state’s progress depends on maintaining the delicate balance between welfare and development.
“As a political party, we’ve always aimed to deliver both. We’ve had our highs and lows, but that’s part of every political journey,” he admits.
Agriculture, Aquaculture, and AI: The Pillars of Andhra’s Growth
Lokesh explains that Andhra Pradesh’s growth story is not limited to the IT or industrial sectors.
“We’re focusing on agriculture, aquaculture, and emerging technologies like AI. These are the real engines of our state’s progress,” he says.
Recalling a recent meeting of the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), Lokesh shares an insightful example:
“One company presented a proposal for mushroom processing, and our Food Processing Secretary mentioned that nearly 90% of the world’s mushrooms come from China. That was a lightbulb moment for me. Within twelve hours, we had a detailed three-page research note ready.”
Following discussions with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, the idea quickly evolved into what Lokesh now calls the ‘Mushroom Mission.’
“Industry will lead the initiative, just like we did in aquaculture. It’s about creating opportunities, jobs, and global competitiveness in new sectors,” he explains.
The $2.4 Trillion Ambition
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Naidu, Andhra Pradesh has set an ambitious vision — transforming from a $188 billion economy into a $2.4 trillion powerhouse by 2047.
“To reach that milestone, every sector must play its role,” Lokesh emphasizes.
“Agriculture will remain critical, but we’re equally focused on industry and services. Every segment matters if we want to build a strong, self-reliant Andhra.”
Lessons from Naidu: Continuity Over Complacency
Reflecting on lessons from his father and mentor, Chandrababu Naidu, Lokesh highlights the importance of stability in governance.
“Winning elections matters, but what truly counts is helping people understand the need for consistent, result-oriented leadership,” he says.
Between 2014 and 2019, the TDP government made major developmental strides. But the following five years, Lokesh notes, brought “poor governance” that left people disillusioned.
“They realized the value of what we had achieved. That’s why we were given such a massive 94% mandate this time,” he says with humility.
“Our focus now is crystal clear — create jobs, attract investment, and ensure every citizen feels the progress.”
The Road Ahead
Balancing welfare with development, promoting innovation, and ensuring good governance — these form the foundation of Andhra Pradesh’s growth roadmap under Nara Lokesh’s leadership.
“As we move forward,” he concludes, “it’s not just about winning elections — it’s about winning trust, sustaining progress, and building a future where every citizen benefits from development.”
