Visakhapatnam: In a big push to clean energy investment in Andhra Pradesh, there is significant aprogress with regard to establishment of the country's first 6 GW solar ingot and water production facility in Anakapalle district near here.
According to officials, Andhra Pradesh is set to lead India into a new era of solar manufacturing with the establishment of the country’s first integrated 6 GW solar ingot and wafer production facility by Anakapalli district by ReNew Photovoltaics, a subsidiary of ReNew Energy Global PLC. The firm is investing Rs3,990 crore to set up a greenfield plant at Rambilli in Anakapalli.
ReNew Energy Global in November announced an additional investment of Rs60,000 crore in Andhra Pradesh in multiple green energy projects across the State. The multinational had earlier committed an investment of Rs22,000 crore in ongoing projects.
The Anakapalle project will be India’s first commercial-scale integrated ingot-wafer manufacturing unit—producing the core building blocks used for solar cells and modules. The proposal was approved by the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday. It will be placed before the Cabinet for final approval next week.
The project aims to significantly reduce India’s dependence on imported components, especially from China, and support the country’s ambitious renewable energy goals of achieving 300 GW of solar capacity by 2030. The facility is backed by the Government of India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for solar manufacturing. The world-class facility will be developed on approximately 130–140 acres of land, which has already been identified and will soon be handed over for construction. The plant is expected to be completed by March 2026, with commercial production beginning by January 2028.
Once operational, the unit will create around 1,200 high-skilled and semi-skilled jobs and require 95 MW of continuous power supply and 10 MLD of water.
With this milestone project, Anakapalle and Visakhapatnam are rapidly emerging as a key hub for solar and clean-energy technology in India. Andhra Pradesh continues to strengthen its position as a preferred destination for large-scale renewable energy investments—fueling India’s green growth transition.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu who is keen on encouraging production of renewable energy in a big way, has set a target to achieve 160 GW renewable capacity by 2029. At the 30th edition of CII Partnership Summit here, he said they have plans to attract investments to the tune of Rs.10 lakh crore investments in solar, wind, green hydrogen and pumped storage projects.
He said they wish to generate 72.6 GW by 2030 and scale it up to 160 GW by 2029.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already performed bhoomi puja for India's first Green Hydrogen Hub near here at a cost of Rs1.85 lakh crore by NTPC Green Energy Limited at Pudimadaka. It will produce 1500 TPD of green hydrogen and derivatves for export using 20 GW renewable energy by 2032 .
While Greenko is investing $4.2 billion on an integrated renewable energy storage project, Brookfield is contemplating to invest Rs50,000 crore giving a big fillip to green energy investment drive. The Hinduja Group last month announced expansion of its 1050 power plant in Visakhapatnam by 1600 MW with an investment of Rs20,000 crore in the State's energy and EV sectors.
As per promise made to Naidu during his visit to London, the group will set up an EV manufacturing network aiming to make Andhra Pradesh a clean energy and e-mobility hub. The group has committed investment in manufacturing of e-buses and light commercial vehicles at Mallavalli in Krishna district and large-scale solar and wind projects mainly in Rayalaseema.
In another development, Hero Future Energies (HEF) signed MoU with Andhra Pradesh Government for an investment of Rs30,000 crore to set up a 4 GW of renewable energy projects in solar, wind and hybrid sector in Anantapur, Kurnool and Kadapa districts giving a big push to efforts to make Andhra Pradesh the renewable energy capital of India.
