Starting in 2025, Indian passports are undergoing major changes to improve security, simplify documentation, and protect personal data, according to Condé Nast Traveller India. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Nationwide Launch of E-Passports:

India has started issuing e-passports, which look like traditional ones but come embedded with a chip. This chip securely stores the holder's biometric and personal data, making immigration processes faster and safer. If your local passport office supports e-passport technology, you’ll automatically receive one when renewing your passport.

2. New Rule for Date of Birth Proof:

For applicants born on or after October 1, 2023, only a government-issued birth certificate will be accepted as proof of date of birth. Those born earlier can continue to submit alternative documents like school certificates, voter IDs, or PAN cards.

3. Residential Address Removed:

To protect user privacy, the residential address will no longer be printed on the last page of the passport. Instead, it will be stored digitally and linked to a scannable barcode accessible only to authorized personnel.

4. Parents’ Names No Longer Required:

Indian passports will no longer display the names of parents or guardians, a move aimed at reducing unnecessary personal disclosures. This update is especially useful for single-parent families and individuals seeking privacy.

5. New Colour-Coding System Introduced:

To make passports more identifiable, the government is introducing colour-coded covers:

White: Government officials

Red: Diplomats

Blue: Ordinary citizens (unchanged)

These upgrades are part of India’s broader mission to modernize its passport system, ensuring a more secure and streamlined experience for all applicants.
