DPR under preparation for Ongole Airport
A detailed feasibility report is being prepared to construct a greenfield airport in Kothapatnam mandal of Ongole district following a growing demand from the locals.
Around 700 acres have already been identified as a probable site for taking up construction once the proposal is found viable. These lands were earlier earmarked for Vadarevu and Nizampatnam (VANPIC) projects.
The State with the support of Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu is pursuing developing seven airports at Kuppam, Srikakulam and other areas.
The government has entrusted the responsibility to expedite Ongole airport development to Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation (APADC). A DPR is under preparation after a team from Delhi visited the proposed site for certain sample studies.
According to revenue officials, in two phases they will acquire nearly 1100 acres. For the first phase they may have to pay Rs.102 crore for private landowners. Ongole Joint Collector R. Gopalakrishna saud they are ready to allot the required land once the DPR finds the airport project viable.
