Vijayawada: Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under the Ministry of Power, has stepped up its efforts to meet the Union Government’s ambitious goal of doubling the rate of energy efficiency improvement by 2030, in line with India’s commitments under the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration (NDLD)..

BEE, which has drawn up the blueprint to go ahead to achieve the targets, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Power for its unstinted support, which has enabled the country to achieve electricity savings of 321.39 billion units, resulting in monetary savings of Rs2 lakh crore and a reduction of 321.06 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

Highlighting the urgency of the mission, BEE stated:“energy efficiency is not merely an option but a national necessity. By doubling the rate of improvement, India can reduce costs, enhance productivity, and significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions.” India’s power sector has already demonstrated remarkable progress, with non-fossil fuel capacity reaching 47.15 per cent and emission intensity reduced by 36 per cent, well ahead of its global commitments.

Ministry of Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal has emphasised the need for focused, time-bound implementation of targets.

BEE Director General KC Panigrahy noted that the G20 Summit hosted by India in 2023 marked a pivotal moment in global energy governance, recognizing energy efficiency as the “first fuel” and adopting a voluntary action plan to double the rate of improvement by 2030.

As per estimates of the International Energy Agency, India’s current energy intensity improvement rate of approximately 2.5 per cent (2024) must increase to 4 per cent by 2030 to meet this commitment.

BEE has urged proactive States including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, Haryana, Odisha, Uttrakhand, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Union Territories to adopt special mechanisms through their State Designated Agencies (SDAs) to achieve enhanced energy efficiency targets. Welcoming BEE’s ambitious roadmap, AP's Chief Secretary K.. Vijayanand, who is also the Chairman of AP State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), announced the State’s full support to the Centre’s mission.
