The TDP-led NDA Government has approved the proposal of Andhra Pradesh Airport Development Corporation (APADC) to complete land acquisition and shifting utilities and facilitate external infrastructure for two greenfield airports in Chittoor and Nellore districts utilising HUDCO loan.

In separate GOs, the government approved the proposal to initiate the procurement of PPP concessionaire for development of greenfield airports at Kuppam and Dagadarthi duly clearing the draft RFP prepared based on the viable option of the techno-economic feasibility report as prepared by RITES.

The Central Government has already given in-principle approval to the development of new airports as part of thrust to improve regional connectivity.

The State Government gave green signal for completing the process of land acquisition and shifting utilities and developing the external infrastructure. The issue figured at the recent Cabinet meeting where Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed the officials to take up work on the airports on a war-footing.

The government has plans to develop airports at Srikakulam, Tuni-Annavaram, Tadepalligudem, Ongole and Nagarjuna Sagar besides operationalizing greenfield airport at Bhogapuram and strengthening traffic at the existing airports in Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Kadapa and Orvakal (Kurnool).

Commercial operations of Visakhapatnam International Airport will move to Bhogapuram once it's thrown open to large-bodied aircraft.

GMR Group, which is developing the first phase at a cost of Rs.4500 crore has agreed to make it operational during 2026. Once it's ready, Visakhapatnam Airport located at IND Dega project of Indian Navy, will be used exclusively for defence purposes like Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad.

As part of second phase of land acquisition under Land Pooling Scheme (LPS) for expanding the Amaravati capital region, there is a proposal to earmark 5,000 acres for an international airport.

Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu during a recent review meeting on air connectivity in Andhra Pradesh promised wholehearted support for building new airports and strengthening existing airports across the State.
