Visakhapatnam: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed the officials to clear all hurdles to hand over possession of the site selected near Anandapuram, a city suburb, to Google for establishing its USD 6 billion data center project.
This is touted as Alphabet Inc--the parent company of Google's largest data center in Asia. Alphabet's data center portfolio is a massive expansion in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
Out of total investment envisaged for Visakhapatnam's AI-centric data center by Google, USD 2 billion will be spent on 1 GW renewable energy project in tune with sustainability goals set by Alphabet Inc.
Besides Google, Adani Group and Sify Technologies have also been allotted sites in the city for setting up data centres with solar power generation envisaging a total investment of over Rs30,000 crore. These projects are expected to make Visakhapatnam a tech and data center hub facilitating achieving AP's target to generate 6 GW renewable energy in five years.
When TDP MLA and former Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao brought to the notice of Chief Minister recently on attempts by YSRCP to stall land acquisition for Google project, Naidu advised the administration to register a case against those who filed a fake complaint against land acquisition in the name of a deceased farmer.
After a meeting with local officials and leaders, the Chief Minister during a brief halt here directed them to enhance the compensation to D-patta landholders besides promising them three cents of land for house construction, a job and construction of shops as part of their rehabilitation package.
At the Global Capability Centres (GCC) Business Summit organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Naidu announced that Google will kickstart work on its data center project very shortly.
He said the project coming after land allotment to TCS and Cognizant will act as a gamechanger for transforming Visakhapatnam into a tech hub.
Accenture, according to reports, has already sought 10 acres in the city from the government for establishing its development centre.
AP Government and Google entered into MoU in December 2024 to promote AI in a big way and strengthen digital infrastructure and skill development ecosystem including setting up a data centre in Visakhapatnam.
