Amazon has launched its first water replenishment project in the Yamuna River watershed, aiming to combat New Delhi’s severe water scarcity and groundwater depletion. This initiative will restore over 400 million litres of water annually, directly benefiting local communities and ecosystems.

Why This Matters

New Delhi is grappling with intense water stress, exacerbated by over-extraction of groundwater and rapid urban expansion. Amazon’s latest project aligns with its goal to return more water to communities than it uses in its operations by 2027.

Key Highlights of the Project:

Led in partnership with Hasten Regeneration, a social enterprise focused on ecosystem restoration.

Restoration of existing water bodies like check dams and ponds, along with new infrastructure including percolation pits and recharge shafts.

Native vegetation will be planted to reduce erosion, enhance soil moisture, and improve the local environment.

Site selection is based on maximizing benefits within the Yamuna River watershed for Delhi’s water security.

Groundwater Recharge for a Water-Secure Delhi

The initiative was announced at the inaugural Amazon Water Dialogues 2025 in New Delhi, which brought together experts, policymakers, and community leaders to address India’s urgent water concerns.

Collaborators on the Project:

Arpan Seva Sansthan – India-based NGO for on-ground implementation.

Clear Water Dynamics – Bangalore-based water engineering consultancy.

Leadership Speak

“This initiative is a powerful step towards collaborative water stewardship in India’s urban and peri-urban regions,” said Sasmit Patra, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha.

Amazon has already implemented lake restoration and community water solutions in other parts of India since 2020, impacting over 1 million people.
