In a major breakthrough in the investigation of the tragic Air India Ahmedabad-London flight crash, authorities have recovered the black box over 28 hours after the accident. The device was found on the rooftop of a building near the crash site—likely the hostel mess of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area—where the aircraft had crashed shortly after takeoff.
The ill-fated flight claimed 241 lives, including Gujarat’s former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Only one passenger, a British-Indian man seated at 11A, survived the disaster. The aircraft was carrying 230 passengers, 2 pilots, and 10 cabin crew members, comprising nationals from India, Britain, Portugal, and Canada.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed the recovery on social media, calling it a critical step forward in the ongoing probe by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Over 40 personnel from the Gujarat government are assisting the Ministry of Civil Aviation teams in the full-scale investigation aimed at uncovering the cause of the crash.
The black box—housing the flight data recorder—is expected to provide crucial insights to help determine what led to this devastating incident.
