Aadhaar e-KYC for Starlink: UIDAI Partners with Musk’s Satellite Internet Firm for Seamless Onboarding

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has formally onboarded Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd, allowing the satellite internet provider to use Aadhaar-based e-KYC for customer verification in India, according to a Ministry of Electronics and IT announcement.

Through this integration, Starlink customers—households, businesses, and institutions—will be able to onboard more quickly, securely, and paperlessly while maintaining adherence to Know Your Customer (KYC) standards.

The action was characterized by UIDAI as a "powerful synergy" between advanced satellite technology and India's reliable digital identity platform.

Authentication for Aadhaar Will Continue to Be Optional

According to current government regulations, Aadhaar authentication is optional for Starlink users, UIDAI clarified. Starlink can use Aadhaar credentials for customer onboarding because it has been approved as a Sub-Authentication User Agency (AUA) and a Sub-eKYC User Agency.

Improving Digital Infrastructure in India

The ministry underlined how Aadhaar is the cornerstone of India's digital public infrastructure and how its ease of use and simplicity have led to its increasing use for face authentication.

"The scalability, dependability, and international recognition of India's digital ecosystem are demonstrated by the use of Aadhaar authentication by a global satellite internet provider like Starlink," the ministry stated.
