The 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC)—which will shape future salary and pension revisions for over one crore central government employees and pensioners—is scheduled for discussion in the Lok Sabha today during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

With rising inflation and stagnant wages, pressure is mounting on the government to provide clarity on the formation and implementation of the CPC. Lawmakers are now demanding specific answers from the Finance Ministry.

Key Demands from Lawmakers

Members of Parliament including TR Baalu and Anand Bhadauria have raised formal questions seeking updates on:

  • The current status of the commission’s formation
  • Reasons for delay in initiating the process
  • Timeline for appointing the Chairperson and Members
  • Schedule for implementing revised pay and pension structures
  • The Finance Ministry is expected to respond with details about the structure, terms of reference, and implementation timeline for the 8th CPC.

When Is the 8th CPC Expected?

The 7th Pay Commission came into effect on January 1, 2016, and Pay Commissions are traditionally constituted every ten years. While the 8th CPC was expected to be announced in 2024–25, with implementation in 2026, there has been no official confirmation yet.

Expected Salary Hikes & Fitment Factor

Though no formal recommendations have been released, media reports suggest:

  • A potential salary hike of 40% to 50%
  • Speculated fitment factors (used to calculate revised pay) between 1.92 and 2.86

These projections have fueled anticipation among employees and retirees, increasing political pressure on the government.

Monsoon Session: Other Key Issues on Agenda

Apart from the CPC discussion, today’s session is expected to witness debates on several critical topics:

  • The recent terror attack in Pahalgam
  • Donald Trump's claims regarding Operation Sindoor
  • Voter list revisions in Bihar
  • The demand for full statehood to Jammu & Kashmir
  • Ongoing violence in Manipur
  • Concerns over India’s foreign policy direction
