On Monday, October 13, 2025, the US stock market will continue to function even though it is the Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples Day) holiday. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq, among other major exchanges, will observe their regular trading hours as per their official holiday schedules.

Stock Market to Operate Normally

The observance of Columbus Day, which is also referred to as Indigenous Peoples Day, will not affect Wall Street reopening after the weekend. The next official stock market holiday in the US will be Thanksgiving when the stock exchanges will be closed on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

The trading on the US exchanges is allowed only on the federal holidays specified annually at the beginning of the year. In some cases, the trading session before a major holiday is cut short, most of the times to a half-day.

What Is Columbus Day?

Columbus Day marks the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492, in the course of a historical journey that eventually led him to think he had reached India. Since that time, the second Monday of October has been officially the day when the U. S. government gives a holiday to its workers.

Nevertheless, in recent years, the holiday has also been identified as Indigenous Peoples Day, a move that has President Joe Biden's backing and is aimed at acknowledging and paying tribute to the Native American tribes that have inhabited the American territory for millennia. Many states and communities now celebrate this as a replacement for traditional Columbus Day observances.

Next US Stock Market Holiday

According to the NYSE’s 2025 holiday calendar, the next market closure is for Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 27, 2025. Markets will reopen the following day, Friday, November 28, but trading will close early at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

After Thanksgiving, the only remaining market holiday for 2025 will be Christmas Day, observed on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
