Indian benchmark indices traded in green during today’s afternoon session, buoyed by buying in ITC shares. However, the uptick may remain restricted on concerns of foreign fund flows and the weakening fiscal outlook of the United States. Media stocks gained for the third consecutive trading session.

As of 1:30 pm, Sensex surged by 886.69 points or 1.10% to 81,835.00, while Nifty went up by 283.60 points or 1.14% to 24,889.80.

On the BSE, close to 2,269 shares rose, while 1,561 shares declined. The value of 171 shares went unchanged.

India VIX soared 1.21% to 17.47.

Gainers and losers

Shares of Eternal, Jio Financial Services, SBI Life Insurance Company were the top gainers on the Nifty gaining by 4.40%, 3%, 2.62% and 2.59% respectively.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Mahindra & Mahindra plunged by 2.82% and 0.05%.

Global markets

European markets traded in green after retail sales in the UK rose by 1.2% in April on a monthly basis. Asian markets surged as investors factored in fresh economic data and monitored diplomatic signals.

Japan’s core consumer price index (CPI), excluding fresh food, surged 3.5% year-on-year in April, the highest monthly rise since early 2023.

In the US, Dow Jones Industrial Average traded flat, dipping 1.35 points, while the S & P 500 fell down by 0.04%. Nasdaq Composite soared 0.28%.
