On October 22, the stock markets in India were closed due to Diwali Balipratipada after a week-long celebration that was highlighted by a special trading session for Diwali Muhurat. The BSE and NSE both reopened for normal trading on Thursday, October 23.

The holiday celebrated by the stock market was extended for Dalal Street. Only two trading holidays remain this year — Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 5th and Christmas on 25th December.

🪔 The festive joy is no longer so intense after Muhurat trading

This shutdown occurred right after the customary one-hour Muhurat trading, which indicated the opening of the new Hindu financial year Samvat 2082, the festival. However, the market had a very good start because of the choice of the day, with Sensex rising more than 270 points, and Nifty 50 briefly going above the mark of 25,900, driven by the shares of Infosys, HDFC Bank, and Mahindra & Mahindra.

At the same time, buying was going on as well towards the end of the session, which led to a reduction of most of the early gains. Though both indexes finished slightly up, they were showing the mixed mood of the investors who had celebrated with symbolic trades.

The close was not very promising, however, the financials, auto, and energy sectors were able to stay on the optimistic side, and some experts even predicted their being the focus of the market's attention again in the months to come.

📈 Samvat 2082: Market outlook brightens

  • The analysts are confident that the good beginning to Samvat 2082 is a signal of a stronger cycle of earnings and growth that will depend on the policies applied.
  • VK Vijayakumar, the Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, opines, “Samvat 2081 was a year of consolidation with earnings growth of very modest 5%. The new Samvat could be the start of recovery”.
  • In the same vein as Geojit, Motilal Oswal Financial Services predicted so, giving reasons for the fiscal and monetary support. “The repo rate cut of 100 bps by the RBI, and a 150 bps cut in CRR, along with liquidity injections and ₹1 lakh crore tax relief, all these measures are likely to create the demand and the corporate earnings,” the brokerage said.
  • It also estimated Nifty earnings to grow by 8% during FY26 and by 16% in FY27, owing to the enhanced private capital expenditure and consumption-led growth.
  • The like of sectors such as BFSI, capital markets, defence and manufacturing, and digital businesses will be at the forefront of the company’s forecast.

🌺 The reason behind the Diwali Balipratipada celebration

Diwali Balipratipada, which is also known as Govardhan Puja and Padwa Day, is celebrated the day after Diwali. The festival marks the annual return of King Bali to his subjects, thus, projecting the traits of opulence, modesty, and restoration.

The day is not only of spiritual but also financial importance for the traders and investors — it means new beginnings and fresh investment cycles.
