IndiGo to start flights to six new destinations

New Delhi: The country's largest airline IndiGo will start direct flights to six new destinations in Africa and Central Asia, including to Nairobi, Tbilisi and Tashkent, this year. Embarking on "massive" international expansion plans, the carrier will connect Nairobi in Kenya and Jakarta in Indonesia, with direct flights from Mumbai in late July or early August. "Delhi will get connected in August to Tbilisi, Georgia & Baku, Azerbaijan and in September to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Almaty, Kazakhstan," IndiGo said in a release on Friday. Once these routes are operational, the budget airline will be connecting a total of 32 international destinations compared to 26 currently. While noting that it is taking a "massive step in its international expansion strategy," IndiGo said it will be adding an "impressive 174 new weekly international flights between June and September 2023, including new destinations, routes, and frequencies".

Sanjay Varma takes over as MRPL MD

Mangaluru: Sanjay Varma has taken charge as managing director (additional charge) of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) here following an order issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Varma has been on the board of MRPL as director (refinery) since June 2020 and has had extensive exposure by being on the boards of MSTPL, ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited and Shell-MRPL Aviation, a release from the company said on Thursday. He has rich exposure in various domains of expertise in the oil and gas industry. During his three-and-a-half decades of service, he headed the organisation in operations management, project management, materials management and health, safety and environment management.

Malabar Gold wins legal battle in Pak

New Delhi: Jewellery retailer Malabar Gold & Diamonds on Friday said a duplicate showroom in its name in Islamabad has been shut down following a legal battle. Malabar Gold & Diamonds also clarified that it does not operate any showroom in Pakistan. The company, in a statement, said it filed a legal case against Muhammad Faizan, a Pakistani national who illegally used the Malabar Gold & Diamonds brand name to operate a jewellery store in Islamabad. In addition to using the brand name and other trademarks to operate his jewellery store, Faizan also managed social media pages in Pakistan using the brand name, brand ambassadors, and product images, it said. "A civil case was filed by the brand in Pakistan, which resulted in a court order that immediately halted the illegal usage," Malabar Gold & Diamonds said in a statement.

Forex kitty drops to $589.14 bn

Mumbai: Falling for the second consecutive week, India's forex reserves dropped by USD 4.339 billion to USD 589.138 billion for the week ended May 26, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. In the previous reporting week, the reserves had declined by USD 6.052 billion to USD 593.477 billion. It can be noted that in October 2021, the country's forex kitty had reached an all-time high of USD 645 billion. The reserves have been declining as the central bank deploys the kitty to defend the rupee amid pressures caused majorly by global developments. For the week ended May 26, the foreign currency assets, a major component of the reserves, declined by USD 4.014 billion to USD 520.931 billion, according to the Weekly Statistical Supplement released by the RBI on Friday.
