Beyond metros: Beauty and wellness sector emerges as opportunity hub for women
Beyond metros: Beauty and wellness sector emerges as opportunity hub for women

Even in the 21st century, when conversations on gender equality are gaining strength, many women still face workplace challenges. Opportunities have widened across industries, but true professional equality remains a gradual journey.
The beauty and wellness sector reflects this contrast. Women form a large share of the workforce and are increasingly building careers, launching ventures, and stepping into leadership roles. Their resilience and ambition continue to reshape the industry.
The beauty and wellness industry has always been closely connected with women’s employment and entrepreneurship. It is one of the few sectors where women not only participate in large numbers but also build independent ventures and create employment for others.
Yet, despite this strong presence, women often encounter barriers that slow their professional growth. These challenges range from societal expectations and family responsibilities to limited access to professional training in certain regions.
In metropolitan cities, women today have greater exposure to professional education, industry networks, and career opportunities. However, the situation can be quite different in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. In many smaller towns, young women still face social restrictions that influence their career choices.
Families may prioritise traditional roles for women or hesitate to support careers that require financial investment in training. There is also a lack of awareness about the immense career potential that industries like beauty and wellness offer.
Another challenge in smaller cities is the limited availability of structured training institutes that provide professional and industry-recognised certifications. Many talented young women have the passion and creativity required for the beauty and wellness field, but they often lack access to the right platforms to learn advanced skills. Without proper training, it becomes difficult for them to compete with professionals in larger cities.
Despite these challenges, the transformation taking place across India is remarkable. Young women from smaller towns are increasingly determined to build independent careers. With access to digital platforms, social media, and online learning resources, they are discovering new possibilities and pursuing their ambitions with confidence.
The beauty and wellness sector has become a powerful avenue for these aspirations because it allows individuals to begin with skill-based training and gradually grow into successful professionals or entrepreneurs.
I have personally witnessed many inspiring stories of young women who began their journeys with limited resources but extraordinary determination. Through professional training, they developed expertise in areas such as skincare, hairstyling, cosmetology, and makeup artistry.
Over time, many of them built thriving careers, opened their own salons, and even started mentoring others in their communities. Their success stories demonstrate that skill development can truly transform lives.
Skill development plays a central role in this journey of empowerment. When a woman learns a professional skill, she gains much more than employment. She gains financial independence, confidence, and the ability to make choices about her own future.
In the beauty and wellness industry, skill-based education allows women to enter the workforce quickly while also providing opportunities for entrepreneurship. A trained professional can work in salons, spas, luxury hospitality establishments, or even establish her own beauty studio.
However, to ensure that more women benefit from these opportunities, it is important to strengthen the ecosystem of skill development across the country.
Training programmes must reach smaller towns and semi-urban regions where the demand for professional education is rapidly growing. Industry bodies, educational institutions, and government initiatives should work together to create accessible and affordable training platforms for aspiring professionals.
Mentorship is another vital factor in empowering women professionals. Experienced industry leaders should actively guide and support emerging talent, particularly in smaller cities where access to mentorship may be limited. When women share knowledge, opportunities, and encouragement with one another, it strengthens the entire professional ecosystem.
Looking ahead, the beauty and wellness sector will continue to grow as one of India’s most dynamic industries. With increasing awareness about grooming, wellness, and self-care, the demand for trained professionals is expanding rapidly. This growth presents a significant opportunity to empower more women through skill development and entrepreneurship.
The path forward lies in education, awareness, and determination. Women across India are proving every day that with the right skills, perseverance, and support, they can overcome barriers and build extraordinary careers. Their journeys remind us that empowerment is not just about opportunities being created—it is also about the courage to pursue them.
