Apple pays Bengaluru man wins Rs 1 lakh compensation for damaged iPhone

In October 2021, Awez Khan, a 30-year-old resident of Frazer Town, purchased an iPhone 13 with a one-year warranty. Several months later, he encountered issues with both the battery and the speaker. Seeking a resolution, in August 2022, he visited the service center in Indiranagar, located in the eastern part of the city.

Initially, Khan was informed that the issues were repairable, and he could expect to receive his repaired iPhone within a week. However, after a few days, he received a call stating that the problem had been resolved, prompting him to visit the service center to retrieve his device.

To his disappointment, upon inspection, Khan discovered that his iPhone still exhibited abnormal functionality. Despite the service center's promise to reevaluate the device, they failed to respond to Khan for a duration of two weeks.

Subsequently, Khan was informed by representatives of iPhone that a glue-like substance had been discovered on the device's outer mesh, which allegedly invalidated the one-year warranty for repairs. Khan made several attempts to communicate his concerns via email to Apple's representatives but received no response.

Frustrated with the lack of resolution, Khan took legal action in October 2022 by sending a legal notice, which, however, went unanswered. In December, he escalated the matter by filing a complaint with the local district consumer disputes redressal commission.

After due consideration, a city consumer court recently ruled in Khan's favor and ordered Apple to compensate him with Rs 79,900, along with interest, and an additional Rs 20,000 to account for the hardships he had endured throughout the ordeal.
