Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged closer cooperation between India and China, referring to their relationship as a ‘Dragon-Elephant tango’—a metaphor for harmony between the two powerful nations. This message was conveyed to Indian President Droupadi Murmu as both countries marked 75 years of diplomatic relations.

Renewed Call for Cooperation

This is not the first time China has used the ‘Dragon-Elephant tango’ analogy. In March, Chinese officials reiterated that a partnership between India and China was the “only right choice” for both nations. On Tuesday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also exchanged congratulatory messages on the milestone.

Historical Context and Geopolitical Implications

The phrase ‘Dragon-Elephant tango’ has been a recurring theme in China’s diplomatic language, particularly since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash that resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers. Given the changing global political landscape, especially with the return of Donald Trump’s trade policies, Beijing appears keen to revive the call for closer ties.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, speaking in March, stated, “China and India are each other’s largest neighbors. We believe both countries should contribute to each other’s success. A cooperative dance between the dragon and the elephant is the only right choice.”

Focus on Border Peace and Trade Relations

As tensions ease along the Himalayan border, President Xi emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence. He expressed China’s willingness to deepen communication, coordinate on international matters, and maintain stability in border regions.

Meanwhile, trade discussions are also gaining traction. Ahead of expected tariff announcements from U.S. President Donald Trump, China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, stated that Beijing is ready to import more Indian goods to balance the trade deficit.

Bilateral trade between India and China stood at $101.7 billion in 2023-24, with India running a significant deficit. India's primary exports to China include petroleum oil, iron ore, marine products, and vegetable oil, amounting to $16.6 billion.

Looking Ahead

As global trade policies shift and geopolitical dynamics evolve, India and China face critical decisions regarding their relationship. Whether the ‘Dragon-Elephant tango’ translates into real-world cooperation remains to be seen, but the call for stronger ties has once again been made at the highest levels.
