The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which sharedio the same sentiments regarding the efforts and expressed its appreciation for the bravery and commitment of Maria Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition leader, to win back democracy in her country, made the press release proclaiming her as the Nobel Peace Prize winner for the year 2025. The ruling recognized the unrelenting work of Machado to bring democratic rights and civil liberties to the Venezuelan population.

The victor will be granted the sum of 11 million Swedish kronor (around USD 1.17 million) as a cash prize, along with a diploma and a Nobel medal.

President of the Committee Jorgen Watne Frydnes mentioned that this year’s decision was strictly based on Alfred Nobel’s original intent of recognizing those that have “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations,” and that the selection was made purely on the grounds of merit.

Former US president Donald Trump, who was rather big-headedly campaigning for the award, was one of the nominees this year. Trump has frequently claimed to be deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize, drawing parallels with Barack Obama, who was awarded it in 2009 for promoting diplomacy and international cooperation.

Talking at the UNGA in September Trump declared: “Everybody says I should get the Nobel Peace Prize. I have abolished seven wars. No president or prime minister has ever accomplished anything remotely similar to that.”

Nobel Prize Calendar and Other 2025 Winners

The Nobel Prizes are customarily presented in the same order of announcement as before, — Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economics.

  • Medicine: Awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their pioneering work on the human immune system.
  • Physics: John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis were honored for their discovery of macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy quantization, which made up the foundation for modern quantum computing.
  • Chemistry: MDs and chemists alike were thrilled to see Richard Robson, Susumu Kitagawa, and Omar Yaghi awarded for their joint effort in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)—a kind of material that has the highest potential of all the energies of nature and the planet's environmental sustainability.
  • Literature: The Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai was recognized for his "one and only entirely corrupting power of paper & ink"—whoever speaks like this surely knows how to write drawings with pen and velvet, even if these drawings are, like in this case, apocalyptic.

The Nobel Peace Prize Awards of 2000–2024

Lately, the most noticeable laureates are Barack Obama (2009), Malala Yousafzai (2014), Kailash Satyarthi (2014), Abiy Ahmed (2019), and Narges Mohammadi (2023). The previous year’s award went to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese group campaigning for nuclear disarmament.

The award conferred on Maria Corina Machado is an overpowering sign for the democracy movement in Venezuela as it not only reveals the support of the world for the peaceful political change but also a dedication to human rights claim.
