Washington, Aug 6: Republican firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene has openly criticized former ally Donald Trump over his decision to raise tariffs on India, marking a deepening rift within the Republican Party. Greene, once one of Trump’s most vocal supporters, also urged him to end Indian H1-B visas and halt U.S. aid to Ukraine, signaling a hard shift in her stance.

Trump Targets India Over Russia Ties

On Monday (Aug 4), President Trump announced plans to impose “substantially higher tariffs” on India, accusing the country of profiteering from Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then selling it on the Open Market for big profits,” Trump posted on X.

He alleged India’s trade with Russia undermines global efforts to stop Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine.

Greene Hits Back: Immigration and Ukraine in Focus

Responding on X, Greene demanded Trump prioritize restricting immigration and ending military support for Ukraine instead of targeting India.

“End Indian H1-B visas replacing American jobs instead and stop funding and sending weapons to the Obama/Biden/Neocon Ukraine Russia war,” she wrote.

Her comments touched a nerve with the Republican base, many of whom believe the H1-B visa program — widely used in the U.S. tech industry — threatens American workers by allowing companies to hire skilled foreign talent.

A Growing Rift With Trump

This public rebuke adds to Greene’s growing disillusionment with the GOP. Over the weekend, she told the Daily Mail:

“I don’t know if the Republican Party is leaving me, or if I’m kind of not relating to the Republican Party as much anymore.”

Greene, once a staunch Trump loyalist, has increasingly voiced concern over his policies — from the Ukraine conflict to his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Ukraine Conflict Remains a Political Minefield

Trump continues to face challenges fulfilling his campaign vow to end the Ukraine war “on day one” if reelected. Last week, he shortened a 50-day ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin into a 10-day ceasefire demand, warning of fresh sanctions if ignored. Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected in Moscow this week for high-level talks.

With Greene’s latest salvo, Trump now faces not only foreign policy hurdles but also a fractured Republican base ahead of the 2024 elections.
