US Lawmaker Calls for Probe Into H-1B Hiring Amid Tech Layoffs, Potential Impact on Indian Talent
US lawmaker urges a probe into H-1B hiring as tech layoffs rise, raising concerns over visa misuse and potential impacts on Indian high-skilled workers.
US Senator calls for a federal review of H-1B hiring practices amid widespread tech layoffs, spotlighting concerns for Indian tech professionals.

A growing debate over the H-1B visa programme has resurfaced in the US, with Senator Ruben Gallego urging the Trump Administration to tighten federal oversight. Gallego warned that major American tech companies are simultaneously laying off domestic employees while continuing to hire thousands of foreign professionals — a practice he says raises significant concerns.
In a letter addressed to Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, USCIS Director Joseph Edlow and Attorney General Pam Bondi, the senator stressed that high-skilled immigration should support economic growth without becoming a means to “undercut or replace US employees.” He added that the current pattern of layoffs followed by sustained H-1B recruitment demands closer examination of how corporations are using the programme.
The issue holds particular importance for Indian tech professionals, who remain the largest recipients of H-1B visas and could be directly affected if stricter rules or investigations are implemented.
