Zohran Mamdani makes history as New York City’s first Indian-origin Muslim mayor; Democrats win key races in Virginia and New Jersey.
Zohran Mamdani celebrates his historic victory in New York City after becoming the city’s first Indian-origin Muslim mayor.

In another landmark development, Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat, has been elected as the Mayor of New York City, becoming the first Indian-origin Muslim mayor of the city. Mamdani, a progressive Democrat Socialist and an ardent advocate for workers, defeated Donald Trump-backed candidates Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa in what was one of the most closely watched contests of the 2025 US elections.
Democrats Sweep Several Important Elections Around the Nation
These elections saw the Democrats registering decisive victories on the national level. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger, with 56% of the votes, was elected the first woman Governor of the state, while Mikie Sherrill was elected Governor of New Jersey.
Exit polls indicated voter rejection of President Donald Trump in several key contests, with analysts citing the results as, perhaps, the greatest referendum on his presidency now about a year after his return to the White House.
Mamdani’s Historic Win and Vision for New York
Following his victory, Zohran Mamdani addressed supporters with an impassioned speech, quoting India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru:
“A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance. Tonight, New York has done just that.”
Mamdani added that his administration would focus on tackling the city’s cost-of-living crisis, emphasizing “clarity, courage, and vision” in his leadership.
“I Refuse to Apologize” — Mamdani on His Identity
In another statement, Mamdani said, “I am young, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist, and most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this.”
Reactions Pour In
A Rabbi and supporter of Mamdani hailed his win as “a symbol of unity,” saying, “We are going to show the world how Jewish people can live under a Muslim Mayor in America. Let this be an example for peace in other parts of the world.”
Former US President Barack Obama congratulated the Democratic winners on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“When we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win. The future looks brighter.”
Other Major Wins
Virginia’s Ghazala Hashmi became the first Muslim American woman elected to statewide office in the US, winning the lieutenant governor’s race.
Jay Jones won the Virginia Attorney General race.
Michelle Wu secured a second term as Boston Mayor, running unopposed.
The 2025 elections are seen as a crucial indicator of America’s political direction ahead of the 2026 midterms, reflecting a growing appetite for diversity, progressive policies, and inclusive leadership.
