The United States Pacific coast is on high alert following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. With tsunami warnings and watches issued across the region, US authorities have released estimated arrival times for potential tsunami waves across Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington.
Tsunami Warnings in Place
In the wake of the powerful quake, President Donald Trump confirmed a Tsunami Warning for Hawaii, and a Tsunami Watch for Alaska and the US Pacific Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington. Japan is also expected to be affected.
While the exact scale of the tsunami remains uncertain, authorities are urging residents to stay alert and follow evacuation orders as needed.

Alaska
Western Aleutian Islands: First waves already arriving
Kodiak: ~12:20 AM ET (9:50 AM IST)
Southeast Alaska: Between 12:45 AM and 1:55 AM ET (10:15–11:25 AM IST)
Hawaii
Estimated Arrival: ~1:15 AM ET (11:25 AM IST)
Tsunami sirens have been triggered across the state. Emergency shelters in Hawaii County have been activated.
“We expect significant damage along coastlines,” said the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.
Washington & Oregon
Estimated Arrival: Between 2:35 AM and 2:55 AM ET (12:05–12:25 PM IST)
Coastal communities are on high alert, with officials urging residents to stay off beaches and away from harbours.
California
Northern California (starting point): ~2:50 AM ET (12:20 PM IST)
San Francisco Bay: ~3:40 AM ET (1:10 PM IST)
Southern California (including LA): ~4:00 AM ET (1:30 PM IST)
The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Francisco has issued a tsunami advisory for the Bay Area and Central Coast, warning of dangerous currents and strong wave activity. All beach access is discouraged until authorities give an all-clear.
The Los Angeles NWS similarly warned of rising water levels, strong surges, and threats to harbours and marinas.
“Tsunamis often come as a series of waves lasting several hours,” said the advisory.
Advisory for Indian Citizens
The Indian Consulate in San Francisco has advised Indian nationals across the West Coast to:
- Stay away from coastal areas
- Move to higher ground if alerts are issued
- Monitor local emergency notifications
- Keep essential items ready in case of evacuation
