US President Donald Trump stated that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) withdrew from the US Congress race after he declined to endorse her, warning that the candidate he would back would "kill her" in the primary. Speaking in North Carolina ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, Trump criticized Greene, saying, “What the hell happened to Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene? Brave would have been staying.” He added, “You can’t go from a strong conservative to a stone-cold liberal unless you are lying.”

Greene, once a staunch supporter of Trump, has now become a critic of the president and has voiced his opinion quite loudly over the past months, especially in the case of the president's laughter about Rob Reiner, the late director, and his selection of domestic issues. The former president's interference over Greene's loud advocacy for the publication of the Jeffrey Epstein documents further deepened the conflict between them.

Greene, in her resignation announcement, referred to family issues and the preservation of political dignity as the ground for her quitting. She wrote that she did not want her district to endure a “hurtful and hateful primary” against the candidate endorsed by Trump. She also accused MAGA leadership of being influenced by “Neocons, Big Pharma, Big Tech, Military Industrial War Complex, foreign leaders, and the elite donor class.”Greene will officially leave Congress on 5 January 2026.

The political repercussions spotlight the increasing divisions within the GOP as the 2026 midterm elections draw nearer, with Greene directing her criticism at Trump for prioritizing foreign policy over domestic issues. She asserted that the American public “desires leaders that are present, perform their duties, and are with them in the struggle every day,” thereby indicating her discontent with the existing party line.
