A sudden but decisive breakthrough in escalating tensions between India and Pakistan was announced Saturday evening, as both nations agreed to a full ceasefire following a night of high-level negotiations mediated by the United States.

At 5:25 pm IST, U.S. President Donald Trump declared via Truth Social that India and Pakistan had reached an agreement to halt all military activity across land, air, and sea, calling it a result of a “long night of talks.” The ceasefire officially came into effect at 5:00 pm IST.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Trump posted. “Congratulations to both countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”

Shortly after Trump’s announcement, confirmations followed from both New Delhi and Islamabad. India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated the agreement was reached during a phone call between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries at 3:35 pm IST.

Diplomatic Engagements and International Support

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also confirmed the development in a post on X, formerly Twitter, noting he had spoken earlier in the day with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir.

Rubio emphasized that the ceasefire marks the beginning of broader diplomatic engagement, saying, “India and Pakistan have agreed to initiate talks on a wide range of issues at a neutral venue. We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif for their wisdom and statesmanship.”

Official Statements from India and Pakistan

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was among the first officials to publicly confirm the ceasefire. “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect,” Dar posted on social media, adding that Islamabad has “always strived for peace and security in the region.”

India’s confirmation followed at 6:00 pm, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri detailing the DGMO-level call and the terms of the agreement. “It was agreed that both sides would cease all military activity on land, in the air, and at sea effective from 1700 hours IST today,” he stated.

Misri also noted that the DGMOs are scheduled to speak again at noon on Monday to continue coordination.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar reiterated India’s position against terrorism while welcoming the ceasefire. “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding to stop all firing and military action,” he wrote. “India remains firmly committed to combating terrorism in all its forms.”
