James Gunn’s Superman continues its reign at the North American box office, topping charts for the second consecutive weekend with a strong $57.3 million domestic haul. The film’s worldwide earnings now stand at an impressive $406.8 million, bolstering DC Studios' plans for a cinematic reboot.

Despite a host of new releases, none came close to challenging Superman, which dipped 54% from its opening weekend—an expected decline for a major summer blockbuster. Industry watchers see this as a solid performance, particularly as the superhero film heads into a competitive weekend ahead, with Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps releasing soon.

A Crucial Win for DC Studios

With a reported production budget of $225 million, Superman is crucial for DC Studios' 10-year strategy to revamp its superhero slate. The film’s strong audience reception and positive critical reviews have reinforced its position as a major summer success. Upcoming DC titles include Supergirl and Clayface, both slated for 2026.

Box Office Competition Heats Up

Though Superman leads the pack, other big titles are still drawing audiences:

Universal’s Jurassic World: Rebirth finished second with $23.4 million in its third weekend. The Scarlett Johansson-led installment has now reached $648 million worldwide.

Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie continues to perform well, especially overseas. In its fourth weekend, it earned $9.6 million domestically and $29.5 million internationally, pushing its global total to $460.8 million.

New Releases Struggle to Impress

New entries to the box office failed to make a major splash:

Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot opened with a modest $13 million on an $18 million budget. Despite being part of a known horror franchise, the film received poor reviews (38% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a “C+” CinemaScore.

Paramount’s Smurfs debuted at $11 million. Featuring Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette, the animated reboot was critically panned (21% on Rotten Tomatoes), though audiences responded more positively with a “B+” CinemaScore. The $58 million film will rely heavily on international revenue, having earned $22.6 million across 56 markets.

Ari Aster’s Eddington had a muted debut with $4.2 million across 2,111 screens. The pandemic-era Western, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, has received mixed reviews and a “C+” CinemaScore, echoing the box office struggles of Aster’s 2023 film Beau Is Afraid.

A Strong Summer for Hollywood

Despite a few underwhelming debuts, the overall 2025 summer box office is showing robust growth. According to Comscore, summer ticket sales are up 15.9% year-over-year, with domestic earnings nearing $2.6 billion. Year-to-date figures are also tracking 15% higher than the same period in 2024, signaling a healthy rebound for the film industry.
