A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves across the Pacific. This powerful quake — one of the world’s strongest in recent years — has led to widespread tsunami warnings in the United States, Japan, Chile, China, Peru, and several other Pacific nations.

The epicenter was located approximately 119 kilometers (74 miles) from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 180,000 in Russia’s Far East. Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov described it as the strongest earthquake in decades, confirming damage to infrastructure, including a kindergarten.

Waves rippled across the northern Pacific, prompting warnings in Alaska, Hawaii, Chile, the Solomon Islands, and as far south as New Zealand. Parts of Ecuador’s coast are bracing for potential waves exceeding 3 meters (10 feet).
