US President Joe Biden on Friday slammed Meta's decision to ditch its fact-checking program, calling it a betrayal of American values.

In a recent media interaction, Biden expressed concern that Meta's move would allow false information to spread unchecked, reaching millions of people.

Biden's criticism comes after Meta announced plans to replace its fact-checking program with user-generated Community Notes, similar to those used by Elon Musk's X. This decision has sparked widespread criticism, with many arguing it will exacerbate the spread of misinformation.

"It's just completely contrary to everything America is about. We want to tell the truth. We haven't always done it as a nation. Telling the truth matters," Biden said.

"The idea that, you know, a billionaire can buy something and say, 'By the way, we are not gonna fact-check anything', and you know, you have millions of people reading, going online, reading this stuff... I think it is really shameful," Biden, who dropped out of the presidential race against Trump midway last year, said.

Furthermore, Brazil also gave Meta 72 hours to explain its fact-checking policy for the country and how it intends to defend its citizens' "fundamental rights" on its platforms.

Attorney General Jorge Messias has threatened to take "legal and judicial" action if Meta fails to answer to its judicial notice in a timely manner.
