Tokyo/Sendai — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday traveled with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba aboard a high-speed bullet train (Shinkansen) from Tokyo to Sendai during his two-day official visit to Japan. The ride underscored deepening cooperation under the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Sharing images from the trip on social media platform X, Ishiba posted: “With Prime Minister Modi to Sendai. Continuing from last night, I’m accompanying him from inside the car.

Meetings and Engagements in Japan

After reaching Sendai, Modi interacted with Indian loco pilots currently undergoing advanced training with Japanese Railways, symbolizing growing rail-sector collaboration. Earlier in Tokyo, he met governors of 16 prefectures, calling for stronger state-to-prefecture partnerships, a focus area launched at the 15th Annual India-Japan Summit.

"State-prefecture cooperation is a vital pillar of India-Japan friendship," Modi wrote on X, highlighting a new initiative to connect Indian states with Japanese regions to promote trade, technology, and investment.

Strategic Diplomacy Before China Leg

PM Modi departed from New Delhi on Thursday (Aug 29) for his first visit to Japan in seven years, aimed at boosting strategic, economic, and technological ties. Following his Japan engagements, Modi will travel to Tianjin, China, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.

In China, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, focusing on regional security, innovation, and economic collaboration.

"India is an active and constructive member of the SCO. During our Presidency, we have introduced new ideas and initiated collaboration in innovation, health, and cultural exchanges," Modi said in his departure statement.
