Partial Solar Eclipse 2025: Last Eclipse of the Year to Dim the Sun Today

The last solar eclipse of 2025, a partial solar eclipse, will dim the Sun tonight. Check timings, visibility cities, and safety precautions.

A partial solar eclipse dims the Sun as the Moon covers part of the solar disk, visible across Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands.

For skywatchers, tonight promises to be a very rare celestial show, as the last solar eclipses of 2025 happen. A partial solar eclipse has more things going for it than a total eclipse. Here, the Moon covers only the Solar disk, dimming sunlight and casting eerie shadows on a few parts of the Southern Hemisphere.

What Makes This Eclipse Special?

Astronomers say that this partial eclipse will darken the Moon more than normal because of the constant changing light and shadow crush between the Earth, Moon, and Sun. The optical effect is not as spectacular as in a lunar eclipse; however, afterward, it might cause the Moon to appear faintly dusky.

Eclipse Timings in IST

  • Beginning of the eclipse: September 21 at 10:59 PM IST
  • Maximum eclipse: September 22 at 01:11 AM IST
  • Ending of the eclipse: September 22 at 03:23 AM IST

The event shall last longer than four hours.

Where Will the Partial Eclipse Be Visible?

The eclipse is visible primarily over the Southern Hemisphere, including:

  • Australia: Sydney, Canberra, Hobart, Lord Howe Island, Macquarie Island
  • New Zealand: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Chatham Islands
  • Pacific Islands: Fiji (Suva, Nadi, Lautoka), Samoa (Apia), American Samoa (Pago Pago), Tonga (Nuku'alofa, Neiafu, Pangai), French Polynesia (Papeete, Bora Bora), Cook Islands (Rarotonga), Vanuatu (Port Vila, Luganville), New Caledonia (Noumea), Tuvalu (Funafuti), Tokelau (Fakaofo), Niue (Alofi), Wallis and Futuna (Mata-Utu)
  • Antarctica: Mario Zucchelli Station, McMurdo
  • For those hopeful that India will be in the eclipse panorama, you will be disappointed.

Safety Advisory

Experts warn that even during a partial eclipse, looking at the Sun with unprotected eyes amounts to severe eye damage. Appropriate viewing must include wearing certified solar viewing glasses or the use of some sort of projection technique. Ordinary sunglasses cannot withhold this glare.

How to Watch

Though the live sky view will be missed over India, the contingent of astronomers in the country can follow this event in online live streams by some observatories and space agencies.
