Charlie Kirk, 31, a prominent conservative activist and senior aide to former President Donald Trump, was fatally shot during a public event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed that Kirk succumbed to injuries after being rushed to a local hospital.
Videos circulating on social media show Kirk clutching his neck as he collapsed during an outdoor appearance organized by his group, Turning Point USA. Investigators have not yet apprehended the suspect, and the FBI has opened a full-scale investigation to track down the individual responsible.
Kirk had recently sparked controversy with statements opposing visa issuance to Indian nationals. On September 2, he posted on X that immigration from India displaced American workers, calling for policies prioritizing domestic employment. His remarks followed a Fox News anchor’s X post highlighting the potential requirement to grant additional visas to India under a prospective trade deal.
Rising from a conservative campus activist to a leading political commentator and podcaster, Kirk was known for his advocacy of the “America First” agenda. His assassination marks a rare high-profile act of political violence in the United States, drawing immediate national attention.
Former President Trump issued a statement on Truth Social, calling Kirk’s death a “dark moment for America” and pledging action. “Charlie inspired millions and was devoted to the cause of open debate and to the United States. Radical left political violence has claimed too many innocent lives,” Trump wrote. He referenced prior incidents of political attacks, including the assassination attempt against him and last year’s killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and vowed to hold all responsible parties accountable.
