Nimisha Priya Case: Indian Government Confirms Execution Postponed, Offers Full Support
India confirms execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen has been postponed. MEA assures full legal and diplomatic support as efforts to reach a blood money settlement continue.

Nimisha Priya, a Keralan nurse who was given a death sentence in Yemen, will not be executed, the Indian government has informed. The postponement comes after continuous legal and diplomatic efforts spearheaded by India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and was initially planned for July 16, 2025.
The government is "offering all possible assistance" to Nimisha Priya's family, MEA spokeswoman Randhir Jaiswal said at a news briefing on Thursday. "We have appointed a lawyer, set up frequent consular visits, given legal aid, and kept in close contact with her family and local authorities," he stated.
In response to previous pleas, Yemeni authorities granted the family more time to negotiate a blood money settlement, which is an alternative to the death penalty allowed by Yemeni law, officials said.
Jaiswal described the situation as "sensitive" and stated that the administration is keeping a close eye on it while also interacting with "friendly governments" to try to resolve any diplomatic issues. But when questioned about Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad's alleged role in mediation attempts, he remained silent.
Because Nimisha Priya killed a Yemeni national, she received a death sentence. A settlement that might save her life is still being sought by her family.
