Netflix to End Support for Older Fire TV Models Starting June 2025

Netflix will stop supporting first-generation Fire TV devices on June 3, 2025, due to outdated hardware and lack of support for modern streaming formats.

If you're still using an old first-generation Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, it’s time to consider an upgrade. Netflix has announced it will stop supporting these older Amazon devices, with the cutoff date set for June 3, 2025. After this date, these devices will no longer be able to access the streaming service.

The decision to drop support comes as no surprise given the significant advancements in streaming technology since these devices launched in 2014 and 2015. The main reason for this move is that the early Fire TV models are outdated, lacking necessary software and security updates, making them less secure and incompatible with newer streaming technologies. Amazon itself ceased supporting these devices years ago.

Netflix is also focused on improving streaming quality, especially for Premium subscribers. The company is now using the AV1 video format, which delivers better picture quality while reducing data usage. However, first-gen Fire TV models do not support AV1, rendering them unable to handle Netflix's current technology improvements.

For those still using these devices, the transition to newer streaming equipment is recommended. Devices such as the Fire TV Stick 4K or Fire TV Stick 4K Max offer better hardware and support for modern video formats like AV1, allowing users to enjoy higher-resolution streaming.

If you're unsure whether your Fire TV model is affected, you can check Amazon's support page for guidance. Only the "Amazon Fire TV (1st Generation)", "Fire TV Stick (1st Generation)", and "Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote" are impacted.

For those planning an upgrade, it might be worth waiting until Amazon's Prime Day in July, as discounts on 4K Fire TV Sticks are typically available. Additionally, Netflix remains compatible with newer devices such as Roku streaming sticks, Android TV-based players, and game consoles.

The Netflix app is already marked as incompatible for new installations on these older devices via the Amazon App Store, and after June 3, 2025, it will no longer be available on them.
