Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump this week, with plans to lower tariffs in several sectors. The move is aimed at boosting American exports to India and preventing a possible trade conflict, according to government officials.

Trump's economic adviser, Kevin Hassett, stated on Monday that India imposes high tariffs that make it difficult for foreign goods to enter the market. This issue is expected to be a major topic in Modi’s discussions with Trump.

Apart from tariff reductions, Modi is also likely to propose increased imports of American energy and defense products during his two-day visit to the U.S., which begins on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Trump announced on Sunday that he would introduce new 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the U.S. on Monday. Additional reciprocal tariffs are expected to be unveiled by midweek and will take effect almost immediately.

Trump has previously criticized India’s trade policies, calling the country a "very big abuser" in global trade. However, Modi’s visit may help ease tensions and pave the way for a possible mini trade deal between the two nations.
