Just weeks after slashing 6,000 jobs in May, Microsoft has laid off an additional 300+ employees in early June, highlighting the ongoing cost-cutting measures sweeping through the tech industry amid a surge in AI investments.

According to a notice reviewed by Bloomberg, more than 300 Microsoft workers were informed on June 2 that their positions had been eliminated. This latest reduction is part of a broader strategy to realign the company’s workforce in response to shifting market demands.

A Microsoft spokesperson commented, “This recent headcount reduction is in addition to the 6,000 job cuts announced last month. We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.”

The tech sector’s AI boom is reshaping hiring priorities, with companies like Microsoft and Meta focusing heavily on AI-related roles while leveraging AI tools to improve productivity and reduce costs. Salesforce recently revealed that using AI internally has enabled it to reduce new hiring needs.

While the bulk of Microsoft’s May layoffs affected software engineers, details on which departments were impacted by the latest cuts have not been disclosed. As of June 2024, Microsoft employed approximately 228,000 full-time staff worldwide, with 55% based in the United States.
