A rare total lunar eclipse, commonly referred to as the Blood Moon, will illuminate the night sky tonight, September 7–8, 2025, so skygazers are in for a treat. Millions of people in Asia, Europe, and Africa will be able to see the celestial show if the weather stays clear.

What's Going On This Evening?

As the Moon moves through Earth's shadow during the eclipse, it will take on a reddish-orange hue. According to astronomers, almost 77% of people on Earth will be able to see it. It will be a lengthy and unforgettable show, lasting approximately 82 minutes when the Moon is fully within Earth's umbra.

Eclipse Timings for Major Cities

Here are the key local timings when the eclipse will be visible tonight:

  • London (BST): 7:30 PM – 7:52 PM
  • Paris (CEST) / Cape Town (SAST): 7:30 PM – 8:52 PM
  • Istanbul, Cairo, Nairobi (EEST/EAT): 8:30 PM – 9:52 PM
  • Mumbai (IST): 11:00 PM – 12:22 AM
  • Delhi (IST): 11:15 PM – 12:37 AM
  • Bangkok, Beijing, Tokyo: After midnight, with clear totality phases

For India, the eclipse will be best visible late at night on September 7 and into the early hours of September 8.

Why Will the Moon Appear Red?

Only the longer red wavelengths of sunlight can reach the Moon due to the Earth's atmosphere's ability to bend and scatter sunlight, giving the Moon a reddish tint that is commonly referred to as the Blood Moon effect. Sunrises and sunsets appear red for the same reason.

The eclipse, which is sometimes called a supermoon eclipse, is made even more spectacular by the fact that it occurs at the Moon's perigee, or closest point to Earth.

How to Safely Watch the Lunar Eclipse

✅ No safety glasses are needed, unlike solar eclipses.

✅ It is safe to observe the eclipse with the unaided eye.

✅ Although binoculars or telescopes can improve the experience, you can still see the reddish glow without them.
