Who Is Janet Petro?

Janet Petro is an accomplished engineer, civil servant, and military veteran, currently serving as NASA's acting Administrator and the 11th Director of the Kennedy Space Center. She was appointed as Kennedy Space Center Director on June 30, 2021, by former NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, becoming the first woman to hold both roles in NASA's history.

Petro’s remarkable career began at the United States Military Academy, where she graduated as a commissioned officer. She served in the U.S. Army’s Aviation Branch, piloting helicopters and leading operations in Germany. After her military tenure, she transitioned to civilian roles, holding leadership positions at Science Applications International Corporation and McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Corporation before joining NASA.

Janet Petro’s contributions have been widely recognized. In 2018, she was inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame. The following year, she received the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Sammies Management Excellence Medal.
